Storm clouds darkened the desert as they exited the maze. Winds gusted, lashing Gabriel and the others with whips of sand while lightning cracked in the distance. It was an odd sight to return to, but not the strangest by far.

Repulsor-equipped enforcers were stationed in front of the maze to the right of theirs, the third of the four mazes assembled for the day’s exercise. Black armor plates with silver stripes adorned the enforcers. Sandbags were piled thick. Regular guards manned heavy weapons emplacements ranging from machine guns to a couple of autocannons to supplement the enforcers’ firepower. All of them were fixed on the same maze entrance.

Recruits scrambled out of the guarded maze, some carried out on the backs of others, unconscious and bleeding badly through their fatigues. The worst ones were dragged out by silver striped soldiers in light power armor. Those recruits were missing limbs, one was blown or crushed in half. It was hard to tell from the brutality of their wounds.

“What the hell is going on?” Gabriel asked.

The second the silver stripes cleared the entrance, everyone seemed to sit in wait, watching the door. Tension thickened in the air with every passing second.

“I don’t know but I don’t wanna find out.” Reylan ran off with Mara to the back lines where additional medical enforcers gathered.

The rest of the group followed but Gabriel stayed behind to watch, even as Nicole tugged him along. When nothing came out of the tunnel, the hatches on the silver striped enforcers dropped. Fresh troops stormed out, a mixed unit of light and standard power armor with rifles far too heavy to reasonably operate without assistance. The servo motors on each suit obviously handled the weight and recoil of those guns just fine. Gabriel couldn’t imagine running at a full sprint with one of those otherwise. There were even thermal blades among their number, the same kind Gabriel could barely lift on his own, and even Titus struggled to swing. But the silver stripes and their armor could wield a blade in one hand and a rather bulky pistol that looked related to those rifles in another. Whatever was going on inside the maze, it was serious.

Gabriel used to think the silver stripes were just a special detachment of guards with some strange similarities to men in black from some outlandish stories he’d heard back in his hab-block. Now he wasn’t so sure he knew better but there was definitely something going on with them. Townsend’s story along with her concerns and James’s own warnings and concerns about Gabriel’s… oddities all made that abundantly clear. After what he did to Viktor on the training yard, Gabriel had an inkling of an idea as to why the silver stripes might need such a heavy and unorthodox loadout.

“Come on, Gabriel.” Nicole tugged him along harder. “If you wanna know what’s going on we can go find Jensen.”

Gabriel winced in agreement. “Good idea.”

He went along with her to the back lines where they found Jensen coordinating things with a man in heavy power armor.
